High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa: Expert Guidance from Application to Decision

The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is a prestigious route for graduates of top global universities to live and work in the UK. Turner Immigration Law provides specialist legal oversight for every stage of your application, ensuring your academic credentials and financial evidence meet the Home Office’s rigorous standards for a successful outcome.

What Is the HPI Visa?

The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is a prestigious immigration route designed for graduates of the world's most elite universities. Introduced as part of the UK’s global talent attraction strategy, it allows individuals who have graduated from a qualifying top-ranked global institution within the last five years to come to the UK to work, seek employment, or start a business.

Unlike most traditional work visas, the HPI route is ‘unsponsored,’ meaning applicants do not need a job offer or a UK-based employer to sponsor their application. This offers unparalleled flexibility, allowing you to move to the UK first and then explore the labor market at your own pace. You can work for any employer, in almost any role, or pursue self-employment and entrepreneurial ventures.

This visa serves as a strategic bridge for high-caliber international talent to establish their roots in the UK economy. It grants you the time and space to build your career without the immediate pressure of visa ties to a specific company. While the HPI visa is a temporary residency permit, it can often lead to further visas or settlement routes if criteria for other categories are met during your stay.

Who Can Apply?

Qualifying degree: You must have been awarded an overseas degree-level qualification in the last 5 years from a university on the Global Universities List.

English language: You must prove you can read, write, speak and understand English to at least level B1 on the CEFR scale.

Financial requirement: You must usually have at least £1,270 in your bank account to show you can support yourself in the UK.

No previous grant: You must not have previously been granted permission under the Student doctorate extension scheme, as a Graduate or as a High Potential Individual.

Annual cap: There is an annual cap of 8,000 people who can apply for a High Potential Individual visa each year.

Age: You must be 18 or over when you apply.

Which Universities Qualify?

The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is reserved for graduates of specific world-leading institutions outside the UK. To qualify, your university must have been listed on the Global Universities List for the year you were awarded your degree. This list, published annually by the UK Home Office, comprises global universities ranked in the top 100 in at least two of the following ranking systems: the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, or the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

How Long Does the HPI Visa Last?

The length of your visa depends on the degree you used to apply:

Bachelor's or master's degree: 2 years.
PhD or doctoral qualification: 3 years.

You cannot extend an HPI visa. However, you may be able to switch to another visa route, such as the Skilled Worker visa, if you find eligible employment.

Dependants: Partners and Children

Your partner and children can apply to join you or stay in the UK as your ‘dependants’ if they are eligible. If their application is successful, their visa will end on the same date as yours.

A dependant partner or child is any of the following: your husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner; your child under 18 - including if they were born in the UK during your stay; your child over 18 if they’re currently in the UK as your dependant.
